About

Chartered on 3rd August 2023 by President William Ruto at Konza Metropolis, the Open University of Kenya (OUK) is Kenya's first dedicated public open, distance, and digital-learning university. Headquartered at Konza Technopolis in Machakos County, OUK serves over 5,000 students through three schools: Science and Technology, Business and Economics, and Education.

The university's initial programmes include Bachelor of Cyber Security and Digital Forensics, Bachelor of Data Science, Bachelor of Technology Education, and Bachelor of Science in Business and Entrepreneurship. Its philosophy is that quality education makes human beings equal, using technology to overcome geographical, economic, and social barriers.

Accredited by CUE and the African Virtual University (AVU) network, OUK ranks 63rd nationally. As Kenya's pioneer open and digital learning university, it aims to increase access to higher education for the over 563,000 KCSE candidates who miss university placement annually.

Research

Ouk's research focuses on open and distance learning, online pedagogy, and educational technology, with early stage but growing publications that address the unique challenges of digital education in kenya. the university's first action research study, published in the journal of the kenya national commission for unesco in 2024, explored learner support strategies for pioneer students, evaluating mobile applications, panopto technology integration, whatsapp groups, and weekly zoom meetings — revealing high satisfaction levels with ouk's digital learning support. partnership with the african virtual university (avu) and the commonwealth of learning (canada) supports research on open learning methodologies and digital education quality assurance. collaboration with kenet (kenya education network) advances research on educational technology infrastructure, while partnerships with dedan kimathi university of technology and the technical university of mombasa support content development and quality standards. research output increasingly informs national policy on open and distance learning, digital pedagogy, and educational technology adoption, positioning ouk as kenya's pioneer institution for odel research and practice.
