About

Established in 2009 as Bondo University College, a constituent college of Maseno University, and chartered in 2013 as Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), the university is located in Bondo, Siaya County. Named after Kenya's first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, JOOUST serves over 10,000 students.

Research

Jooust's research is anchored by the blue economy institute (bei), established in march 2020 to leverage the university's location on the shores of lake victoria for research in freshwater science, aquatic ecosystems, and sustainable resource management. the government has invested approximately ksh.580 million in the blue economy research hub, a specialised laboratory complex on 70 acres of lakefront land designed for fisheries research, climate change studies, and aquatic biodiversity assessment. designated research niche areas include agriculture and food security, freshwater sciences, engineering and renewable energy. the pii global institute supports innovation and commercialisation of research outputs. partnerships with sida (sweden) and anafe strengthen research in agriculture and natural resources. the university's planned constituent college focused on fisheries research, named in honour of former us president barack obama, further cements jooust's position as a regional centre for aquatic science, with research directly informing national blue economy policy and lake victoria basin management.
