Umma University (UU)

Established in 1997 as Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies and chartered in 2019, Umma University is Kenya's first Islamic chartered university. Located in Kajiado County with a Thika-Makongeni campus, the university serves over 10,400 students.

The university operates four faculties including Sharia and Islamic Studies, Business Management, Computer Science and IT, and Nursing. Its Islamic foundation integrates Islamic values with modern professional training across all programmes.

Accredited by CUE, the institution ranks 53rd nationally. Notable alumni include Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, founder of a major humanitarian organisation. As Kenya's first chartered Islamic university, it serves the educational needs of Kenya's Muslim community while welcoming students of all faiths.

Umma university focuses on research integrating islamic studies with modern disciplines including business, technology, and health sciences, with growing output in publications that bridge islamic scholarship with contemporary academic fields. the faculty of sharia and islamic studies advances research on islamic jurisprudence, sharia law in east africa, and the role of islamic education in modern society, producing scholarship that informs the muslim community's engagement with kenya's legal and educational frameworks. the faculty of business management investigates islamic finance, ethical entrepreneurship, and business management from an islamic perspective, while the faculty of computer science and it researches technology applications for development in muslim communities. the faculty of nursing conducts research on community health, with particular attention to health challenges in marginalised communities. partnership with the international university of africa (sudan) supports collaborative research in islamic studies and arabic language. direct aid international connection links the university to a broader network of islamic educational and humanitarian research across africa.

A C+ mean grade in KCSE for Bachelor's programmes. Law programme requires B in English or Kiswahili. Affordable fees payable in installments with HELB eligibility.
