About

Established in 2008 as South Eastern Kenya University College, a constituent college of the University of Nairobi, and chartered in 2013, South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) is located in Kwa Vonza, Kitui County. The university serves over 18,000 students across its Main Campus and centres in Kitui Town, Mtito-Andei, and Wote.

Its engineering programmes are EBK-accredited.

Accredited by CUE and EBK, SEKU ranks 18th nationally. Its location in the semi-arid Ukambani region gives it a unique mandate for dryland agriculture, mining, and environmental research, addressing the challenges of Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands.

Research

Seku's directorate of research, innovation and technology (drit) coordinates research across five themes: innovation, research, technology, partnership, and community service, with a specialised focus on arid and semi arid lands (asals). the school of environment, water and natural resources leads research on water harvesting, sand dam technology, and climate change adaptation in kitui county, with active projects on rainwater harvesting for food security and soil carbon sequestration. a four year partnership with vu university (belgium) and moi university advances sustainable livelihood improvement in asals, while collaboration with munich technical university (germany) supports dryland research. partnerships with the china university of mining and technology and the african minerals development centre strengthen mining and geological research. seku's research on smallholder farmer climate adaptation, moringa cultivation, and reservoir sedimentation directly informs agricultural policy in kitui, makueni, and the broader eastern kenya region.
