About

Established in 2007 as a constituent college of Egerton University and chartered in 2013, Kisii University is located in Kisii Town, Kisii County. The university serves over 15,000 students across its Main Campus and centres in Keroka, Nyamira, Ogembo, and Isebania.

The university operates ten schools including Law, Education, Business and Economics, Agriculture and Biotechnology, Health Sciences, Computing and Informatics, and Pure and Applied Sciences. Its location in the Gusii highlands gives it a unique research focus on highland agriculture and community health.

Accredited by CUE and the Council of Legal Education (CLE), the university ranks 8th nationally. It is the only public university headquartered in the Gusii region, serving as the primary gateway to higher education for the communities of south-western Kenya.

Research

Kisii university focuses on applied research in agriculture, education, social sciences, and community based projects that directly address the needs of the gusii region and western kenya. the school of agriculture and natural resource management advances research on indigenous crops and sustainable farming practices suited to the highland ecosystem, while the school of health sciences investigates tropical diseases prevalent in the lake victoria basin. partnerships with the african virtual university (avu) expand open and distance learning, and collaborations with loyola university (usa) support student exchange and academic development. the inter university council for east africa (iucea) affiliation ensures regional standards compliance. research output is growing steadily, with particular strengths in education pedagogy, legal scholarship, and community health interventions that inform county level policy in kisii, nyamira, and surrounding counties.
