About
Founded in 1994, Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf (KTTID) was the first TVET institution in Kenya exclusively for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Its mission is to provide inclusive, quality technical training that empowers deaf youth with vocational competence and entrepreneurship skills. The institute offers National Certificate and Diploma programmes in ICT, Fashion Design, Catering, Building Technology, Electrical Installation, and Sign Language Instruction. All instruction is delivered in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) with visual media, and students also learn KSL as a subject to enhance communication.
KTTID is accredited by TVETA and recognized by the Kenya National Qualifications Authority.
Accredited by TVETA and KNEC, the institution serves as a key technical training centre for the region.

Research and innovation
Karen Technical Training Institute for the Deaf conducts applied technical research and skills innovation aligned with the TVET CDACC Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework and Nairobi County development priorities. The institution hosts annual technical trade exhibitions and participates in regional KATTI research fairs, showcasing student and faculty innovations in renewable energy (solar and biogas installations), metal fabrication, agricultural mechanization, electrical building services, and ICT business solutions. Applied research projects collaborate with local informal sector artisans (Jua Kali), county vocational directorates, and community micro-enterprises to deliver practical engineering prototypes and community-level economic solutions.
