Artisan in Carpentry and Joinery

The Artisan in Carpentry and Joinery is a TVET-CDACC Level 4 competency-based programme that trains students in fundamental carpentry and woodwork skills for the construction and furniture sectors. The course is examined by TVET-CDACC and offered across accredited TVET institutions in Kenya. Students learn basic wood handling, measuring, cutting, planing, jointing, tool handling, and furniture assembly assistance.

The curriculum covers basic units including communication skills, numeracy skills, digital literacy, entrepreneurial skills, employability skills, environmental literacy, and occupational safety and health practices. Core units focus on basic measurement, wood handling, sanding and finishing, simple jointing, tool handling, basic cutting and planing, and industrial attachment in a carpentry workshop.

Kenya's construction and furniture manufacturing sectors create sustained demand for carpentry support personnel. Furniture workshops, construction companies, and interior fitting businesses require trained carpentry assistants for furniture making, roof construction, door and window installation, and woodwork projects.

Training combines classroom theory with practical sessions in carpentry workshop environments. Students practice measuring, marking, cutting, planing, jointing, sanding, and basic furniture assembly under supervised conditions. The programme includes industrial attachment in carpentry workshops or construction sites where students apply their skills in real woodworking environments.

Graduates work as carpentry helpers, wood handlers, furniture assembly assistants, and workshop assistants in furniture workshops, construction companies, and interior fitting businesses. The qualification provides a foundation for progression to Carpentry and Joinery Level 5 and Level 6 for specialised carpentry and furniture technology roles.

This programme is suitable for KCSE certificate holders with a mean grade of E or KCPE certificate who are interested in practical woodworking skills and seeking direct entry into the carpentry and furniture sector.
