Master of Medicine in Pathology

The Master of Medicine in Pathology is a postgraduate medical specialty programme that trains medical doctors to become specialist pathologists. The programme prepares graduates to provide diagnostic pathology services, perform autopsies, conduct pathology research, and support clinical decision-making in Kenya and beyond.

Core areas of study include anatomic pathology, forensic pathology, clinical pathology, haematology, clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, immunology, molecular pathology, cytology, blood transfusion, and research methods. Students engage with both theoretical foundations and extensive laboratory and clinical practice across all pathology disciplines.

The programme is offered by numerous universities across Kenya, with University of Nairobi as a college. University of Nairobi offers MMed Human Pathology through its Department of Human Pathology, launched in 1985. The curriculum was reviewed and expanded to include molecular pathology and forensic pathology, extending the programme to four years.

Students develop competencies in histopathology, cytopathology, autopsy performance, forensic pathology, haematology diagnosis, clinical chemistry interpretation, microbiology diagnosis, blood transfusion, molecular pathology techniques, and pathology research. The programme includes coursework, laboratory rotations, diagnostic practice, examinations, and a research dissertation.

The programme is delivered over four years with full-time residency mode at University of Nairobi, with training at Kenyatta National Hospital laboratories. The programme is face-to-face with at least two-thirds attendance required. From the third year, students carry out a supervised research project. Graduates become general pathologists capable of providing services at all levels of clinical laboratories.

Graduates pursue careers as consultant pathologists, forensic pathologists, haematopathologists, molecular pathologists, cytotechnologists, and academic pathologists in hospitals, laboratories, medical schools, and health ministries.

A day as a student

A typical day during the MMed Pathology residency begins with morning laboratory sessions where residents examine tissue specimens under the microscope, preparing and interpreting histopathology slides. Residents diagnose cancers, inflammatory conditions, and infectious diseases from tissue samples. Grossing sessions involve examining surgical specimens, selecting tissue blocks, and documenting findings. Cytopathology sessions involve interpreting Pap smears and fine needle aspiration specimens. Haematology sessions involve examining blood films, interpreting CBC results, and diagnosing haematological malignancies. Clinical chemistry sessions involve interpreting biochemical panels and managing laboratory quality. Autopsy sessions involve performing medical and forensic autopsies to determine cause of death. Academic sessions include lectures on pathology principles, case discussions, and journal clubs reviewing recent pathology research. Molecular pathology sessions introduce DNA analysis and molecular diagnostic techniques. Research methodology sessions from the third year prepare residents for their dissertation. The programme at University of Nairobi is based at the Department of Human Pathology with Kenyatta National Hospital laboratory access. The four-year programme culminates in MMed examinations and dissertation defence.
