Diploma in Business Studies
The Diploma in Business Studies is a three-year programme examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and offered at technical and vocational training institutions across Kenya. It equips students with competencies in business management, accounting, marketing, office administration, and business law. The programme is accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) under the TVET Act, 2013.
Module I covers financial accounting, information communication technology, communication skills, economics, business law, entrepreneurship, business plan, human and public relations, sales and marketing, business finance, life skills, and occupational safety. Students learn foundational business principles, accounting basics, and commercial law.
Module II advances to office administration and management, marketing management, supply and transport management, quantitative techniques, commercial and administrative law, and cost accounting. Module III focuses on organisation theory and behaviour, labour and industrial relations, principles and practice of management, human resource management, managerial accounting, financial management, research methods, and a trade project.
The programme combines theory with case studies, business simulations, and practical projects. Students learn to manage business operations, prepare financial statements, develop marketing strategies, and administer office systems. A trade project in Module III requires students to apply business management competencies to a real business scenario.
Entry requirements are a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus) or a pass in a relevant Craft Certificate. The programme is widely available at national polytechnics, technical training institutes, and business colleges across Kenya.
Graduates pursue careers as office supervisors, business administrators, marketing assistants, accounting assistants, and human resource assistants in businesses, government, NGOs, and financial institutions. The programme provides a progression pathway to a Higher National Diploma and subsequently to a degree in business management, commerce, or related fields.
The programme includes a compulsory industrial attachment. Government-sponsored students placed through KUCCPS receive capitation funding, and HELB loans are available for eligible students. The standardised annual tuition fee at public TVET institutions is KES 67,189.
