Diploma in Business Management
The Diploma in Business Management is a three-year programme examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and offered across numerous technical and vocational training institutions in Kenya. It equips students with knowledge and skills in business administration, financial management, human resource management, and entrepreneurship. The programme is accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) under the TVET Act, 2013.
Module I covers financial accounting, information communication technology, communication skills, economics, business law, and entrepreneurship. Students learn the foundational principles of business operations, record-keeping, and legal frameworks governing commercial activities in Kenya. Module II advances to office administration and management, marketing management, supply and transport management, quantitative techniques, commercial and administrative law, and cost accounting.
Module III focuses on organisation theory and behaviour, labour and industrial relations, principles and practice of management, human resource management, managerial accounting, financial management, and a course specialisation project. The programme follows a modular structure with end-of-module KNEC examinations.
Entry requirements are a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus) or a pass in a relevant Craft Certificate. The programme is widely available at national polytechnics, technical training institutes, and university-affiliated TVET centres across Kenya, including Kabete National Polytechnic, Kenya Coast National Polytechnic, and Kenyatta University TVET.
Graduates pursue careers as office supervisors, administrative assistants, marketing officers, human resource assistants, and procurement officers. The programme provides a progression pathway to a Higher National Diploma in Business Management and subsequently to a bachelor's degree in business-related fields at recognised universities.
The programme includes a compulsory industrial attachment that provides students with practical workplace experience. Government-sponsored students placed through KUCCPS receive capitation funding, and HELB loans are available for eligible students. The standardised annual tuition fee for diploma programmes at public TVET institutions in Kenya is KES 67,189.

Common misconceptions
A diploma in business management is inferior to a university degree.
The diploma provides practical, industry-relevant skills and offers a direct progression pathway to a Higher National Diploma and subsequently to a bachelor's degree.
Business management graduates cannot find jobs in Kenya.
Graduates are employed across all sectors as administrative officers, marketing assistants, and procurement officers, with many progressing to managerial roles.
The programme is only for students who failed to qualify for university.
Many students choose the diploma for its practical orientation, shorter duration, and direct industry relevance, with some upgrading to degree level later.
All TVET institutions charge the same fees.
While public institutions follow a standardised fee structure of KES 67,189 per year, private institutions set their own fees, which may be higher.
