Overview

Kenya's aquaculture sector has expanded significantly through government initiatives such as the Aquaculture Business Development Programme and Economic Stimulus Programme, creating demand for trained fish farming technicians. The programme aligns with the needs of fish farms, hatcheries, government fisheries departments, and aquaculture enterprises across the country.

The programme is delivered through full-time study at technical training institutes, national polytechnics, and specialised institutions such as the Kenya Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) and Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT). Teaching combines classroom instruction with extensive practical sessions at fish ponds, hatcheries, and field attachment at aquaculture facilities.

Graduates can work as aquaculture technicians, fish farm assistants, hatchery assistants, and fisheries extension assistants in fish farms, government fisheries departments, and aquaculture enterprises. Many proceed to pursue the Diploma in Aquaculture Management (CDACC Level 6).

A day as a student

Field visits to commercial fish farms and hatcheries are regularly organised.
