Certificate in Sustainable Agriculture

The Certificate in Sustainable Agriculture is a KNEC Craft Certificate programme that trains students in sustainable farming practices, conservation agriculture, and agribusiness skills. The course is examined by KNEC and offered across accredited TVET institutions in Kenya. Students learn sustainable agriculture principles, soil health management, organic farming, water conservation, integrated pest management, agroforestry, and climate-smart agriculture.

The curriculum covers communication skills, mathematics, information communication technology, entrepreneurship, and occupational safety. Core units include introduction to sustainable agriculture, sustainable agriculture principles, soil health management, organic farming, water conservation, integrated pest management, agroforestry, biodiversity and conservation, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable farm business, and industrial attachment on a sustainable farm or agricultural enterprise.

Kenya's agricultural sector transformation towards sustainable practices, climate adaptation, and food security creates demand for certified sustainable agriculture personnel. Agricultural organisations, NGOs, county agricultural departments, and commercial farms require trained personnel to promote and implement sustainable farming practices.

Training combines classroom theory with practical sessions in farm and field environments. Students practice soil management, organic farming, water conservation, pest management, and agroforestry under supervised conditions. The programme includes industrial attachment on sustainable farms or with agricultural organisations where students apply their skills in real farming environments.

Graduates work as sustainable agriculture assistants, conservation farming assistants, organic farming assistants, agricultural extension assistants, and farm supervisors in agricultural organisations, NGOs, county agricultural departments, and commercial farms. The qualification provides a foundation for progression to Diploma in Sustainable Agriculture for specialised agricultural management and extension roles.

This programme is suitable for KCSE graduates with a mean grade of D (plain) who are interested in sustainable farming and environmental conservation and seeking technical positions in the agricultural and agribusiness sector.
