Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry
The Bachelor of Science in Applied Chemistry is a four-year programme that prepares students for chemical analysis, industrial chemistry, quality control, environmental monitoring and research. Students study inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and industrial chemistry, as well as chemical technology, instrumentation, quality assurance and safety. The programme provides practical skills for chemistry applications in industry, environment, health and research.
Students develop competencies in chemical synthesis, analysis, instrumentation, quality control, industrial processes, environmental chemistry and research. They learn to perform chemical analyses, use analytical instruments, ensure product quality, manage chemical processes and support research and development. The programme covers organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and industrial chemistry.
In Kenya, applied chemists are needed in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, water, oil and gas, environmental monitoring and research. The Technical University of Kenya, University of Nairobi, JKUAT, Kenyatta University, Chuka, Dedan Kimathi, Kisii, Masinde Muliro, Multimedia, Pwani, Taita Taveta, University of Embu and Mount Kenya University offer related chemistry programmes. Graduates find roles in quality control laboratories, research institutes, manufacturing, environmental agencies and chemical companies.
Teaching is delivered through lectures, laboratory practicals, industrial visits, research projects and industrial attachment. Students use spectroscopic, chromatographic, electrochemical and other analytical instruments, and undertake a final research project.
Graduates pursue careers as chemists, analytical chemists, quality control officers, industrial chemists, research scientists and chemical safety officers. Some work in industrial laboratories. Others join research institutions, environmental agencies or chemical manufacturing.
