Overview
The curriculum covers general linguistics, phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, language contact, translation, discourse analysis, research methods, and applied linguistics.
Students develop competencies in linguistic analysis, language description, research methods, academic writing, public speaking, translation, and communication skills. The programme combines lectures, seminars, tutorials, and practical exercises.
Graduates pursue careers as language teachers, translators, interpreters, editors, linguistic consultants, researchers, speech therapists, and communications officers. They find employment in schools, universities, publishing firms, media houses, translation agencies, government ministries, and international organisations.
The programme is offered at multiple universities including the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kisii University, Rongo University, and Murang'a University of Technology. Annual tuition fees for government-sponsored students range from KSH 122,400 at Murang'a University to KSH 153,000 at Rongo University and Moi University.
Accreditation is provided by the Commission for University Education (CUE). Admission requires a KCSE mean grade of C+ with a minimum of B- in English, following KUCCPS cluster subject requirements. The programme also accepts diploma holders and A-level holders with appropriate qualifications.
