About

Named in honour of Thomas Joseph Mboya, one of Kenya's most prominent independence-era leaders, Tom Mboya University was established in 2015 as a constituent college of Maseno University and chartered in 2022. Located in Homa Bay Town, Homa Bay County, the university serves over 7,000 students.

The university operates seven faculties including Education, Business and Economics, Physical and Biological Sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, Blue Economy, and Social Sciences. Its location on the shores of Lake Victoria supports research in freshwater ecology and the blue economy.

Accredited by CUE and the IUCEA, the university ranks 42nd nationally. It is the only public university headquartered in Homa Bay County, serving as the primary higher education institution for the communities of Kenya's southern Lake Victoria region.

Research at tom mboya university focuses on agricultural innovation, business development, and socio economic issues relevant to the lake region, with particular emphasis on blue economy opportunities along lake victoria's shores. the faculty of blue economy conducts research on fisheries management, aquaculture, and sustainable utilisation of lake victoria resources — directly addressing the economic potential of the lake for homa bay communities. the faculty of physical and biological sciences investigates water quality, aquatic biodiversity, and environmental challenges in the lake victoria basin. the faculty of business and economics researches entrepreneurship, trade, and value chain development in the south nyanza economy. partnership with the african virtual university (avu) expands access to postgraduate training, while the iucea affiliation ensures regional standards. the cmg argwings kodhek faculty of law contributes legal scholarship on governance and resource rights. research output increasingly informs county level fisheries policy, environmental management, and economic development across homa bay and the wider lake region.
