About

Established in 1948 as the Mombasa Technical Institute, the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) was chartered in 2013 as a full public university. Located in Mombasa's Tudor area, TUM serves over 10,000 students across its Main Campus and centres in Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu.

The university operates schools of Engineering and Technology, Applied Sciences, Business and Economics, Computing and Informatics, and Social Sciences and Humanities. Its coastal location gives it a unique focus on maritime technology, renewable energy, and coastal engineering.

Accredited by CUE, TUM ranks 10th nationally. As the only technical university on Kenya's coast, TUM plays a critical role in training engineers and technicians for the the institution port, coastal industries, and the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor.

Research

Tum focuses on applied research in coastal and marine engineering, renewable energy, and information technology, leveraging its strategic location along kenya's coastline. the institute of maritime and seafaring studies serves as a centre of excellence in maritime education and training, with the marine engine simulator (ers 5000) enabling cutting edge research in shipboard operations and safety. tum became the first institution in africa to integrate cloud simulation systems in maritime training, partnering with admiral g.i. nevelskoy maritime state university (russia) for sea training. collaboration with the kenya maritime authority and jiangsu university (china) supports research in maritime policy, port management, and engineering. the institute of research, innovation and extension (arie) coordinates research across all schools, with growing output in tropical health sciences, coastal ecology, and maritime logistics that directly informs the blue economy agenda of kenya's vision 2030.
