About

Opened on 25th August 1986 as the Theological Centre of Religious with 20 students from seven countries, Tangaza University was chartered on 2nd May 2024 by President William Ruto. Located on Lang'ata South Road in Karen, Nairobi, the university is jointly owned by 22 Institutes of Consecrated Life and serves over 2,000 students from more than 40 countries.

The university operates four schools including Theology, Arts and Social Sciences, Education, and Applied Science and Technology, along with the Institute of Philosophy. Its name 'the institution' — Swahili for 'announce' — reflects its mission of communicating Christ and forming leaders for the Church and society in Africa.

Accredited by CUE, the institution ranks 60th nationally. Its international student body and religious congregation ownership make it one of Kenya's most culturally diverse faith-based universities, forming Catholic leaders for service across the African continent.

Research

Tangaza university focuses on research in theology, philosophy, social transformation, and peace studies, with publications in religious formation and african contextual theology. the school of theology advances research on catholic theology, african christianity, religious formation, and the role of religious congregations in the african church, building on nearly four decades of inter congregational theological education. the school of arts and social sciences conducts research on social transformation, counselling psychology, child and youth studies, and sustainable development, while the school of education investigates pedagogical approaches for values based education. the institute of philosophy contributes research on african philosophy and philosophical anthropology. affiliation with cuea and amecea connects tangaza to a broad network of catholic scholarship across eastern africa. the school of theology's academic affiliation with the pontificia universita urbaniana in rome links the university to global catholic theological research. research output increasingly informs religious formation, church policy, and social transformation across the amecea region.
