Maseno University (Maseno)

Established in 1991 as a constituent college of Moi University and chartered in 2001, Maseno University is located in Maseno, Kisumu County, along the shores of Lake Victoria. The university serves over 18,000 students across its Main, Kisumu City, and Homa Bay campuses.

The university operates 15 schools including Medicine, Nursing, Business and Economics, Education, Computing and Informatics, Law, Agriculture and Food Security, and Public Health and Community Development. The School of Medicine is based at the Kisumu City Campus, leveraging Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for clinical training.

Accredited by CUE, the institution ranks 5th nationally. It is the only Kenyan university located along the Lake Victoria basin, giving it a unique research focus on freshwater ecology, tropical medicine, and regional public health.

Maseno university focuses on interdisciplinary research in environmental sustainability, freshwater ecology, health sciences, and community development, leveraging its unique equator location for ecological and climate studies. the school of medicine and school of public health and community development drive research on hiv/aids interventions and tropical diseases affecting western kenya, while the school of environment and earth sciences advances freshwater ecosystem research around lake victoria. partnerships with johns hopkins school of medicine (usa), ohio university (usa), and the university of groningen (netherlands) support collaborative research in public health and environmental science. the commonwealth of learning (canada) partnership expands open and distance learning, while sida (sweden) funds capacity building in research methodology. maseno's research increasingly informs county level health policy and conservation efforts in the lake victoria basin, bridging academic inquiry with community impact across kisumu and the wider western region.

A C+ mean grade is the minimum for a Bachelor's degree; competitive programmes (medicine, engineering, law, nursing, architecture) require higher grades and specific KCSE subject clusters. Master's programmes require a relevant Bachelor's degree; PhD programmes a relevant Master's degree.
