Makueni University College (MUC)

Gazetted in November 2025 as a constituent college of South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Makueni University College (MUCO) is located in Wote, Makueni County. The college builds on SEKU's existing Wote Campus which had already enrolled over 600 government-sponsored students. The university serves over 2,500 students.

The college operates three schools: Education, Business and Economics, and Agriculture and Natural Resources. Its establishment followed sustained advocacy by the Makueni County Government, with Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. reaffirming commitment to fast-tracking full operationalisation.

Accredited by CUE and the IUCEA, MUCO ranks 70th nationally. It is the only public university college headquartered in Makueni County, serving as the primary higher education institution for the Ukambani region, with programmes addressing dryland agriculture and community development.

Research at makueni university college focuses on agricultural innovation and community development, with outputs addressing the unique challenges of makueni county's semi arid environment. the school of agriculture and natural resources conducts research on dryland farming, drought resistant crops, water harvesting, and sustainable natural resource management — critical for a county where food security is constrained by erratic rainfall and environmental degradation. the school of education advances pedagogical research on teaching quality and educational access in marginalised communities, while the school of business and economics investigates entrepreneurship, sme development, and value chain management in the ukambani economy. partnership with seku as mentor institution provides research supervision, quality assurance, and access to seku's established research infrastructure. the iucea and african virtual university (avu) partnerships support distance learning research and regional standards compliance. collaboration with the makueni county government ensures research relevance to county development priorities. research output increasingly informs dryland agricultural practice, educational policy, and county level development planning across makueni and the wider ukambani region.

A C+ mean grade is the minimum for a Bachelor's degree; competitive programmes (medicine, engineering, law, nursing, architecture) require higher grades and specific KCSE subject clusters. Master's programmes require a relevant Bachelor's degree; PhD programmes a relevant Master's degree.
