About

Ruiru Technical and Vocational College, located in Kiambu County near Nairobi, was established in 2009 to address the growing demand for skilled technical labor in Kenya's rapidly expanding economy. The college offers a range of diploma, certificate, and artisan programs in engineering, ICT, business, and applied sciences, with a strong emphasis on hands-on training and industry partnerships.

Its mission is to produce competent, innovative graduates who can contribute to national development goals, particularly Kenya's Vision 2030 and the Big Four Agenda. The institution has grown steadily, now enrolling over 1,800 students in both full-time and part-time modalities, and has become a key trainer for the surrounding industrial and agricultural sectors.

In 2026, the college continues to align its curriculum with emerging technologies such as renewable energy, digital marketing, and mechatronics,

Research and innovation

Ruiru Technical and Vocational College conducts applied technical research and skills innovation aligned with the TVET CDACC Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework and Kiambu County development priorities. The institution hosts annual technical trade exhibitions and participates in regional KATTI research fairs, showcasing student and faculty innovations in renewable energy (solar and biogas installations), metal fabrication, agricultural mechanization, electrical building services, and ICT business solutions. Applied research projects collaborate with local informal sector artisans (Jua Kali), county vocational directorates, and community micro-enterprises to deliver practical engineering prototypes and community-level economic solutions.
