Certificate in Plumbing Technology

The Certificate in Plumbing Technology is a KNEC Craft Certificate programme that trains students in plumbing systems design, installation, and maintenance for the construction and building services sector. The course is examined by KNEC and offered across accredited TVET institutions in Kenya. Students learn advanced plumbing systems, pipe fitting, water supply, drainage, solar water heating, and green plumbing technologies.

The curriculum covers communication skills, mathematics, science, technical drawing, information communication technology, entrepreneurship, and occupational safety. Core units include introduction to plumbing technology, advanced plumbing principles, advanced pipe systems, solar water heating systems, water pumping systems, system design and planning, plumbing automation, green plumbing, water treatment, plumbing regulations, and industrial attachment in a plumbing company or construction site.

Kenya's construction sector growth, including residential developments, commercial buildings, and water supply projects, creates demand for certified plumbing technology personnel. Plumbing contractors, construction companies, water service providers, and maintenance departments require trained technicians for installation, design, and maintenance of plumbing systems.

Training combines classroom theory with practical sessions in workshop and site environments. Students practice pipe fitting, system design, solar installation, pump maintenance, and green plumbing under supervised conditions. The programme includes industrial attachment with plumbing contractors or on construction sites where students apply their skills in real installation environments.

Graduates work as plumbing technicians, pipe fitting specialists, solar water heating installers, water system designers, and plumbing maintenance technicians for plumbing contractors, construction companies, water service providers, and facilities management companies. The qualification provides a foundation for progression to Diploma in Plumbing Engineering for specialised plumbing engineering and building services roles.

This programme is suitable for KCSE graduates with a mean grade of D (plain) who are interested in plumbing and water systems and seeking technical positions in the plumbing technology and building services sector.

The trade offs

In its favour

  • Advanced plumbing technology skills are in growing demand.
  • Solar and green plumbing are growing sectors.
  • Clear pathway to diploma and degree in building services engineering.

Against it

  • Requires understanding of both plumbing and technology.
  • Technology evolves rapidly, requiring continuous learning.
