About
Established in 1975 under the aegis of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) is a premier intergovernmental institution based in Nairobi, Kenya. Its mission is to promote sustainable development through geospatial information and remote sensing technologies across Africa.
RCMRD offers a range of TVET and professional development programmes in surveying, mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and natural resource management. These include diploma courses, short-term professional courses, and specialized training for government and private sector practitioners. The institution is fully accredited by TVETA and the Kenya National Qualifications Authority.
The Centre plays a pivotal role in supporting Kenya's Vision 2030 and the African Union's Agenda 2063 by building capacity in spatial data infrastructure.

Research and innovation
Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development conducts applied technical research and skills innovation aligned with the TVET CDACC Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework and Nairobi County development priorities. The institution hosts annual technical trade exhibitions and participates in regional KATTI research fairs, showcasing student and faculty innovations in renewable energy (solar and biogas installations), metal fabrication, agricultural mechanization, electrical building services, and ICT business solutions. Applied research projects collaborate with local informal sector artisans (Jua Kali), county vocational directorates, and community micro-enterprises to deliver practical engineering prototypes and community-level economic solutions.
