Overview

Students engage with advanced topics in Kiswahili linguistics, Kiswahili literature, oral literature and traditions, Kiswahili language pedagogy, translation and interpretation, Kiswahili lexicography, comparative Bantu linguistics, Kiswahili in media and technology, language policy and planning and research methods.

The curriculum emphasises original research that develops Kiswahili insights for Kenya's language and cultural development.

Kenya's Kiswahili as national and official language, EAC adoption of Kiswahili, literary production in Kiswahili, language standardisation needs, Kiswahili in education, media and technology and the need for Kiswahili research create demand for doctoral-level expertise. The programme supports Kenya's language development and cultural preservation goals.

Teaching is delivered through coursework and supervised research. At UoN, the Department of Kiswahili offers PhD in Kiswahili Studies (C82) with tuition at KSh 192,000/year, total KSh 712,000 over 3 years. At KU, PhD in Kiswahili is offered at KSh 244,800/year for East Africans. Application fee KSh 3,000 at KU.
