Overview
It is designed to produce scholars capable of advancing research in linguistics, language structure and language use. The programme addresses Kenya's linguistics research and language development needs.
Students engage with advanced topics in phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, computational linguistics, language documentation, comparative linguistics, language contact and research methods. The curriculum emphasises original research that develops linguistic insights for Kenya's multilingual context.
Kenya's rich linguistic diversity with over 40 languages, Kiswahili as national language, English as official language, language endangerment concerns, language policy needs, computational linguistics for African languages and the demand for linguistic research create demand for doctoral-level expertise. The programme supports Kenya's language development and documentation goals.
Teaching is delivered through coursework and supervised research. At UoN, the Department of Linguistics and Languages offers PhD in Linguistics and Languages (C811) with tuition at KSh 192,000/year, Year 1 total KSh 224,000, Year 2 KSh 219,000, Year 3 KSh 269,000, total KSh 712,000 over 3 years. At KU, PhD in English and Linguistics and PhD in Applied Linguistics are offered at KSh 244,800/year for East Africans.
