Overview

Students engage with advanced topics in linguistic theory, applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, syntax and semantics, English language teaching, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, African literature, postcolonial literature, research methods and literary theory. The curriculum emphasises original research that develops insights into English language use, linguistic diversity and literary expression in Kenya and Africa.

Kenya's multilingual context, the role of English as an official language, the need for language policy research and the growth of African literary scholarship create demand for doctoral-level English and linguistics expertise. The programme supports Kenya's language education and literary scholarship goals.

Teaching is delivered through coursework and supervised research. At Kenyatta University, the programme is offered through the Department of English and Linguistics. Annual fees are KSh 244,800 for East Africans and KSh 306,000 for non-East Africans, consistent with other humanities PhD programmes at KU.

Graduates pursue careers as university professors, linguistics researchers, language education specialists, literary scholars and communication consultants. They work in universities, publishing houses, media organisations, Ministry of Education and international language organisations.
