The Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development is a doctoral programme that combines extension science with rural development studies. It is designed to produce scholars capable of advancing research on how agricultural knowledge, innovations and development interventions can transform rural livelihoods in Kenya and East Africa.

Students engage with advanced topics in rural development theory, agricultural extension systems, livelihoods analysis, community development, rural sociology, agricultural policy, participatory development and research methods. The curriculum emphasises original research that addresses the interconnected challenges of agricultural production, poverty reduction and rural transformation.

Kenya's devolution, the Big Four Agenda's focus on food security and manufacturing, and the emphasis on rural industrialisation create demand for experts who understand both extension and broader rural development dynamics. The programme supports evidence-based policy for rural transformation.

Teaching is delivered through coursework, seminars and supervised research. Students conduct field research in rural communities, working with farmers, extension officers, community organisations and local government. The programme is offered full-time and part-time with a minimum duration of three years.

Graduates pursue careers as university professors, rural development researchers, policy analysts, NGO programme directors and county government advisors. They work in universities, government ministries, NGOs, international development organisations and county governments.
