Overview
Students engage with advanced topics in extension education theory, agricultural communication, farmer innovation systems, participatory extension approaches, adult education in agriculture, research methods and programme evaluation. The curriculum emphasises original research that addresses the challenges of agricultural knowledge transfer in Kenya's devolved governance system.
Kenya's devolution transferred agricultural extension functions to 47 county governments, creating demand for experts who can design, implement and evaluate extension programmes. The programme supports the modernisation of extension services through ICT integration, farmer-led innovation and climate-smart agriculture advisory services.
Teaching is delivered through coursework, seminars and supervised research at MMUST in Kakamega. Students conduct field research with extension officers, farmers and agricultural organisations. The programme is offered full-time and part-time with a minimum duration of three years.
Graduates pursue careers as university professors, extension education researchers, county extension service directors, agricultural communication specialists and development consultants. They work in universities, county governments, NGOs and international agricultural development organisations.
