Diploma in Perioperative Theatre Technology

The Diploma in Perioperative Theatre Technology is a two-year programme offered at selected medical training colleges in Kenya. It equips students with competencies in operating theatre management, surgical assistance, infection control, and perioperative patient care. The programme is assessed through TVET CDACC competency-based assessment and is accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).

Year 1 covers anatomy and physiology, microbiology and infection control, perioperative environment management, surgical instruments and equipment, patient preparation for surgery, anaesthesia basics, and communication skills. Students learn the foundational principles of perioperative care, theatre hygiene, and surgical instrumentation.

Year 2 advances to surgical procedures assistance, perioperative emergencies, sterilisation and disinfection, theatre administration and management, quality assurance in perioperative care, and a practicum. Students gain practical experience through clinical attachments in hospital operating theatres.

The programme combines theory with extensive clinical practice in operating theatres. Students learn to prepare the theatre environment, assist surgical teams during operations, manage surgical instruments, maintain sterile fields, and ensure patient safety throughout the perioperative period.

Entry requirements are a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus) or a Certificate in Perioperative Theatre Technology (Level 5) from a recognised institution. The programme is offered at private medical training colleges including North Coast Medical Training College, Maseno School of Nursing, and GoCare Training Institute. KMTC does not currently offer this programme.

Graduates pursue careers as perioperative theatre technologists, surgical technologists, theatre assistants, and anaesthetic assistants in hospitals, surgical centres, and trauma centres. The programme provides a progression pathway to higher qualifications in perioperative care and surgical technology.

The programme includes a compulsory clinical attachment of at least 12 weeks in a hospital with an operating theatre. Graduates fill a critical gap in Kenya's surgical workforce, supporting surgeons and anaesthetists in theatre operations.
