Diploma in Hotel Management

The Diploma in Hotel Management is a three-year KNEC-examined programme designed to prepare learners for supervisory and managerial roles within the hospitality industry. The course equips students with practical skills in food and beverage production, accommodation operations, front office management, and hospitality accounting, alongside theoretical foundations in tourism marketing, human resource management, and strategic planning.

Students develop competencies in menu planning and costing, cost control, hotel information systems, food hygiene and safety, and rooms division management. The programme also exposes learners to at least one foreign language, recognising the multilingual nature of the global hospitality industry and enhancing employability in international hotel chains.

Kenya's hospitality sector is a major contributor to the national economy, with tourism being a leading source of foreign exchange. The growing number of international hotel brands entering the Kenyan market has created sustained demand for qualified hospitality professionals who can deliver world-class service standards while understanding local cultural nuances.

Teaching methods include lectures, practical demonstrations in production kitchens and restaurants, laboratory sessions, group discussions, and industrial attachment. Students spend at least three months on attachment in a recognised hotel or lodge, applying classroom theory to real-world operations under professional supervision.

Graduates find employment as food and beverage supervisors, front office managers, housekeeping managers, restaurant managers, catering officers, and guest relations officers in hotels, lodges, restaurants, cruise ships, and conference centres. Many also pursue entrepreneurial ventures in catering, accommodation, and event management.

This programme is ideal for KCSE graduates with a mean grade of C- (minus) who are passionate about service excellence, enjoy working in dynamic multicultural environments, and aspire to leadership roles in the hospitality industry. Prior exposure to home science or business studies is advantageous but not mandatory.

Students attend theory lectures on hotel management, combined with practical sessions in training hotels and kitchens. Activities include front office operations, housekeeping management, F&B service, hotel accounting, staff scheduling, marketing, quality audits, and hotel operations management. Industrial attachment at hotels, lodges, or resorts provides real-world management experience.
