Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management

The Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management is a three-year KNEC-examined programme that prepares learners for supervisory and managerial roles in the hospitality and tourism industry. The course integrates hospitality operations with tourism management, covering food production, accommodation services, tour operations, tourism marketing, and destination management.

Students develop competencies in food and beverage production and service, housekeeping and front office operations, tourism economics, tour guiding, travel agency operations, tourism product development, and ecotourism. The programme also includes foreign language training, entrepreneurship education, and research methods, ensuring graduates are well-rounded professionals ready for the dynamic tourism sector.

Kenya's tourism industry is a pillar of the national economy, contributing significantly to GDP and employment. The country's diverse attractions, from wildlife reserves to coastal beaches and cultural heritage sites, draw visitors from around the world. Post-pandemic recovery and government initiatives to diversify tourism products have created renewed demand for qualified professionals who can deliver exceptional visitor experiences.

The programme combines theoretical instruction with practical training in production kitchens, restaurants, and simulated front office environments. Students undertake industrial attachment in hotels, lodges, tour companies, or travel agencies, gaining real-world experience. The course is delivered through lectures, practical demonstrations, field visits, and project work, with KNEC examinations at each module level.

Graduates find employment as hotel supervisors, tour operations managers, travel agency coordinators, tourism officers, guest relations managers, and catering supervisors. They work in hotels, lodges, tour companies, travel agencies, national parks, county tourism departments, and event management companies. Many also establish their own hospitality or tourism enterprises.

This programme is ideal for KCSE graduates with a mean grade of C- (minus) who are passionate about hospitality and tourism, enjoy working with people from diverse backgrounds, and aspire to management roles in this vibrant industry. Strong communication skills and a service-oriented attitude are essential.
