Diploma in Certified Public Accountants (CPA)

Certified Public Accountants (CPA) is Kenya's gold-standard professional accountancy qualification, examined nationally by the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examination Board (KASNEB) rather than delivered as a conventional college diploma.

The qualification is structured into three levels — Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced — each containing several papers covering financial accounting, management accounting, auditing, taxation, law, economics, and strategic finance, examined twice yearly in May and November. CPA(K) is the recognised gateway into Kenya's banks, audit firms, listed companies, and public-sector finance roles, and completion is a requirement for membership of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).

Training is delivered by KASNEB-registered colleges and university CPA sections through classroom, evening, weekend, or distance study, working through the levels toward the CPA(K) designation.

Holders progress into roles across accounting, auditing, finance management, and tax consultancy, with the credential recognised regionally across East Africa and valued internationally.

The qualification suits KCSE graduates with a mean grade of C+ and above (or equivalent/prior KASNEB qualifications) who want Kenya's most recognised accountancy credential, whether alongside or instead of a university degree.

The trade offs

In its favour

  • Kenya's most recognised and respected accountancy qualification, opening doors across the entire finance sector.
  • Can be pursued directly from KCSE without first needing a degree, and studied flexibly alongside work.

Against it

  • National KASNEB pass rates, especially at Advanced level, can be demanding and require sustained self-discipline.
  • Full qualification typically takes 3-4+ years of consistent study across all levels.

Industry links

Common misconceptions

  • CPA is a college diploma like other TVET diplomas.

It is a professional examination qualification set by KASNEB, not a college-awarded diploma, though colleges provide the tuition.

  • You need a university degree first to start CPA.

CPA can be started directly from KCSE with a C+ mean grade or equivalent, without first completing a degree.

  • CPA and ATD lead to the same career ceiling.

CPA is the full professional qualification and ICPAK membership route; ATD is a lower-tier technician qualification that can feed into CPA with exemptions.
