Diploma in Building Technology

The Diploma in Building Technology is a KNEC-examined programme that prepares trainees for employment in the building and construction sector. The course covers building construction, structures, surveying, technical drawing, construction materials, estimating and costing, and construction management across three modules.

Students develop competencies in building construction techniques, structural analysis, geotechnology, concrete technology, workshop technology, and measurement of building works. The programme also covers building services, construction plant and equipment, and the use of CAD software for building drawing and design.

Kenya's construction sector is growing rapidly, driven by the government's Affordable Housing Programme, infrastructure development, and urban expansion. The demand for qualified building technicians who can supervise construction sites, estimate costs, and manage building projects has increased significantly across both public and private sector construction projects.

The programme combines classroom theory with extensive workshop practicals, site visits, and surveying fieldwork. Students participate in building construction practicals, concrete testing, surveying exercises, and CAD drawing projects. Two supervised industrial attachments with construction companies provide hands-on workplace experience on real building sites.

Graduates find employment as site supervisors, building technicians, estimators, construction managers, and forepersons. They work with construction companies, county governments, architectural and engineering consultancies, property developers, and the National Construction Authority. Many graduates also establish their own building contracting businesses.

This programme is suitable for KCSE graduates with a mean grade of C- (minus) who are interested in construction, building design, and site management. It provides a direct pathway into Kenya's construction sector with progression options to degree programmes in building technology, construction management, or quantity surveying.
