Craft in Carpentry and Joinery

The Craft Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery is a KNEC Craft Certificate programme that trains students in woodworking, furniture construction, and joinery skills. The course is examined by KNEC and offered across accredited TVET institutions in Kenya. Students learn wood measurement, cutting, planing, jointing, sanding, finishing, furniture assembly, and workshop safety.

The curriculum covers communication skills, mathematics, technical drawing, information communication technology, entrepreneurship, and occupational safety. Core units include basic measurement, wood handling, sanding and finishing, safety and practices, simple jointing, tool handling, basic cutting and planing, basic furniture assembly, and industrial attachment in a carpentry workshop or furniture factory.

Kenya's construction and furniture manufacturing sectors create demand for certified carpentry and joinery personnel. Furniture workshops, construction companies, interior fitting businesses, and timber processing enterprises require trained carpenters for furniture making, woodwork, and construction carpentry.

Training combines classroom theory with practical sessions in carpentry workshop environments. Students practice measuring, cutting, planing, jointing, sanding, finishing, and furniture assembly under supervised conditions. The programme includes industrial attachment in carpentry workshops or furniture factories where students apply their skills in real woodworking environments.

Graduates work as carpenters, furniture makers, joinery assistants, woodwork technicians, and workshop assistants in furniture workshops, construction companies, interior fitting businesses, and timber processing enterprises. The qualification provides a foundation for progression to Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery for specialised carpentry technology and furniture manufacturing roles.
