Certificate in Plumbing

The Certificate in Plumbing is a two-year Craft Certificate programme examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and offered at technical and vocational training institutions across Kenya. It equips students with skills in plumbing installation, pipe fitting, water supply systems, drainage systems, and sanitary fittings. The programme is accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) under the TVET Act, 2013.

Module I covers mathematics, plumbing craft theory, site and workshop management, technical drawing, and practical sessions. Students learn fundamental plumbing principles, pipe materials, jointing methods, and basic installation techniques. Module II advances to advanced plumbing theory, water supply systems, drainage and sanitation, plumbing project, and industrial attachment.

The programme is highly practical, with students spending significant time in workshops and on construction sites. Students learn to install and maintain water supply systems, drainage systems, sanitary fixtures, and plumbing appliances in residential and commercial buildings.

Entry requirements are a KCSE mean grade of D (plain) or a pass in a relevant Artisan Certificate. The programme is widely available at national polytechnics, technical training institutes, and vocational training centres across Kenya.

Graduates pursue careers as plumbers, pipe fitters, plumbing technicians, and maintenance plumbers in construction companies, plumbing contractors, water companies, and government departments. The programme provides a progression pathway to a Diploma in Plumbing Engineering and subsequently to higher qualifications in building services engineering.

The programme includes a compulsory industrial attachment on construction sites or with plumbing contractors. Government-sponsored students placed through KUCCPS receive capitation funding, and HELB loans are available for eligible students. The standardised annual tuition fee at public TVET institutions is KES 67,189.
