Certificate in Community Health

The Certificate in Community Health is a two-year programme offered by the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) at selected campuses across Kenya. It equips students with skills in community health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and primary healthcare delivery. The programme is accredited by the relevant health regulatory bodies under the Ministry of Health.

Year 1 covers community health principles, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, primary healthcare, health education and promotion, epidemiology, and communication skills. Students learn the foundational concepts of public health, disease causation, and community health assessment.

Year 2 advances to environmental health, maternal and child health, nutrition, community health research, health programme management, and a practicum. Students gain practical experience through field attachments in community health settings, health centres, and primary healthcare facilities.

The programme follows a modular structure with end-of-semester examinations and clinical assessments. Students participate in community health campaigns, health education sessions, and household health surveys as part of their practical training.

Entry requirements are a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus), with D+ in English or Kiswahili, D in Biology or Biological Sciences, and D in any one of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Agriculture, or Home Science. The programme is available at selected KMTC campuses across Kenya.

Graduates pursue careers as community health assistants, health promotion assistants, and community health workers in county health departments, NGOs, and community-based health programmes. The programme provides a progression pathway to a Diploma in Community Health through the KMTC upgrading pathway.

The programme plays a critical role in Kenya's community health strategy, which deploys community health workers at the household level. KMTC is the primary training institution for community health professionals in Kenya, with graduates employed across all levels of the primary healthcare system.
