Bachelor of Science in Hydrology and Water Resources

The Bachelor of Science in Hydrology and Water Resources is a programme that provides comprehensive training in water science, hydrological processes and integrated water resource management. Offered at the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Maseno University, Egerton University and other institutions, the programme prepares graduates for careers in water resource management, hydrology and water planning.

The curriculum covers hydrology, water resource management, hydrogeology, water quality, watershed management, irrigation and drainage, water supply, sanitation, hydrometeorology, hydrological modelling, GIS for water resources, water policy and law, climate change and water, environmental impact assessment, research methods and a research project. Students develop analytical, field and management skills for water resources.

Kenya's water challenges, irrigation expansion, water supply projects and climate change adaptation create demand for hydrology and water resources graduates. The programme is offered through lectures, fieldwork, laboratory sessions, industrial attachment and research projects.

Graduates are prepared for careers as hydrologists, water resource managers, water planners, irrigation specialists, watershed managers, water quality officers, water consultants, hydrological modellers and research scientists. They work in the Water Resources Authority, Ministry of Water, county governments, water companies, NGOs, consulting firms and international organisations.

The programme is accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE). Admission requires KCSE mean grade C+ with C+ in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry, and English or Kiswahili. KUCCPS Cluster 4.
