Bachelor of Science in Hydrology and Water Resources Management

The Bachelor of Science in Hydrology and Water Resources Management is a degree programme designed to train professionals capable of addressing water resource challenges in Kenya and beyond. The programme is offered at South Eastern Kenya University and equips students with the knowledge and skills to manage surface water, groundwater and water quality in the context of sustainable development.

The curriculum covers surface water hydrology, groundwater hydrology, water resources management and development, wastewater treatment systems, sedimentology and wetland resources. Students learn to assess water availability, monitor water quality and design interventions for sustainable water resource utilisation in different environmental contexts.

Throughout the programme, students develop competencies in water quality monitoring, watershed management, irrigation systems, water treatment and the management of freshwater ecosystems. The course integrates theoretical knowledge with practical fieldwork, laboratory analysis and industrial attachment in water resource management institutions.

The programme addresses critical issues including water scarcity in arid and semi-arid lands, climate change impacts on water resources, ecotoxicological monitoring and the application of geographic information systems to water resource management. Students gain hands-on experience with hydrological modelling and water quality assessment techniques.

Graduates are prepared to contribute to water resource planning, management and policy development in government agencies, research institutions and consulting firms. They play a vital role in ensuring sustainable water resource use, which is critical for Kenya agricultural, industrial and domestic water needs.
