Bachelor of Science in Applied Biotechnology

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Biotechnology is a four-year programme that prepares students for biotechnology applications in agriculture, health, industry and environment. Students study molecular biology, genetic engineering, cell culture, fermentation, bioinformatics, bioprocessing, biosafety and research methods. The programme provides practical skills for biotechnology research, product development and industrial applications.

Students develop competencies in recombinant DNA technology, cell culture, microbial biotechnology, fermentation, bioprocessing, quality assurance, biosafety and research. They learn to apply biotechnology in crop improvement, medical diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, industrial processes and environmental management. The programme covers molecular biology, genetic engineering, microbiology, fermentation, bioprocessing and bioinformatics.

In Kenya, biotechnology is applied in agriculture, health, industry and environment. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenyatta University, Maseno University, Meru University, Kisii University, Pwani University, Technical University of Kenya and Mount Kenya University offer this programme. Graduates find roles in research institutes, biotechnology firms, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, health and environmental organisations.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, laboratory practicals, industrial visits, research projects and industrial attachment. Students perform PCR, gel electrophoresis, cell culture, fermentation, and use bioinformatics tools. The programme includes a final research project.

Graduates pursue careers as biotechnologists, research scientists, laboratory managers, quality assurance officers, product development officers and bioprocessing technicians. Some work in research. Others join pharmaceutical, agricultural, industrial or environmental biotechnology firms.
