Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Earth Sciences)
The Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Earth Sciences) is a four-year degree programme that equips students with knowledge of earth systems, environmental processes, and resource management. The programme integrates geology, atmospheric science, and environmental science to address complex environmental challenges.
The curriculum covers earth science principles, environmental physics, environmental chemistry, environmental biology, environmental monitoring and evaluation, ecological techniques, geology, atmospheric science, hydrology, soil science, geographic information systems, environmental impact assessment, and research methods.
Teaching combines lectures, laboratory practicals, field trips, and research projects. Students gain hands-on experience with geological fieldwork, environmental sampling, laboratory analysis, and geospatial techniques. The programme emphasises practical earth science skills alongside theoretical foundations.
Graduates pursue careers as environmental scientists, geologists, hydrologists, environmental consultants, mining surveyors, climate analysts, and research officers. Opportunities exist in NEMA, Kenya Meteorological Department, mining companies, environmental consultancies, county governments, and research institutions.
The programme is offered at Maasai Mara University, a public university in Narok County. Admission requires a KCSE mean grade of C+ with C+ in at least two of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Physics, or Agriculture. The programme runs for eight semesters with September and January intakes.
Accreditation is provided by the Commission for University Education (CUE). Annual tuition is approximately KES 275,400 based on KUCCPS data. HELB loans and government bursaries are available for eligible students.Key SubjectsCalculus and Linear AlgebraOrganic ChemistryCell BiologyClassical MechanicsStatistical MethodsAnalytical ChemistryMicrobiologyQuantum PhysicsEcologyResearch MethodsSpecializationsGeneral PracticeBroad foundational knowledge covering core principles and practices in the field.Research and AnalysisFocus on research methods, data analysis, and evidence-based decision making.General PracticeBroad foundational knowledge covering core principles and practices in the field.Research and AnalysisFocus on research methods, data analysis, and evidence-based decision making.

The trade offs
In its favour
- Accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
- Graduates are eligible for HELB loans and government funding.
Against it
- Limited programme specialisation options may be available.
- Competitive job market requiring practical experience and networking.
What it costs
Tuition at both ends of the market, and how to pay for it.
What it costs, and where
Against 181 environmental science coursesAnnual tuition in Kenyan shillings, rounded. The upright tick is the median for this field, so a bar sitting entirely to its right is an expensive programme by the standards of its own subject.
The fine print
KU 244.8K/yr (ku.ac.ke). UoN BSc ~261K/yr (educationnewshub). MKU 121.2K, Kabarak 184K.
