Bachelor of Engineering in Geospatial Engineering

The Bachelor of Engineering in Geospatial Engineering is a five-year programme that prepares students for professional practice in surveying, mapping, geographic information systems and remote sensing. Students study geomatics, GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry, land surveying and GPS technology. The programme is offered by the University of Nairobi and JKUAT.

Students develop competencies in land surveying, GIS analysis, remote sensing, photogrammetry, GPS positioning, cartography and geospatial data management. They learn to conduct surveys, create maps, analyse spatial data and manage geospatial information systems. The programme covers engineering mathematics, geodesy, surveying, GIS, remote sensing and land management.

In Kenya, geospatial engineering is critical for land administration, infrastructure planning, natural resource management and urban planning. Kenya's land reform agenda and infrastructure development create demand. The Engineers Board of Kenya and the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya regulate the profession. Graduates find roles in surveying firms, government ministries, land registries, GIS companies and infrastructure agencies.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, field surveys, laboratory sessions, GIS practicals, industrial attachment and research projects. Students work with surveying equipment, GIS software, GPS receivers and remote sensing data. The programme includes a final-year design or research project.

Graduates pursue careers as geospatial engineers, land surveyors, GIS specialists, remote sensing analysts and cartographers. Some work for surveying firms or government ministries. Others join GIS companies, land registries or infrastructure agencies.
