Bachelor of Science in Geospatial Engineering
The Bachelor of Science in Geospatial Engineering is a programme that provides comprehensive training in surveying, geospatial information science and spatial data management. Offered at the University of Nairobi, JKUAT, Technical University of Kenya, Kenyatta University and other institutions, the programme prepares graduates for careers in surveying, mapping and geospatial technology.
The curriculum covers surveying, geodesy, photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, cartography, land administration, GPS, digital mapping, spatial analysis, land information systems, cadastral surveying, engineering surveying, hydrographic surveying, mine surveying, programming, research methods and a final year project. Students develop technical skills in spatial data acquisition and management.
Kenya's land reform agenda, infrastructure development and the growing use of geospatial technology create demand for geospatial engineering graduates. The programme is offered through lectures, field surveying camps, computer laboratories, industrial attachment and research projects.
Graduates are prepared for careers as geospatial engineers, surveyors, GIS specialists, remote sensing analysts, cartographers, land administrators, hydrographic surveyors, cadastral surveyors, geospatial consultants and mapping specialists. They work in the Ministry of Lands, county governments, surveying firms, construction companies, mining companies, telecommunications, NGOs and as consultants.
The programme is accredited by the Commission for University Education (CUE) and the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK). Admission requires KCSE mean grade C+ with B- in Mathematics, Physics and English or Kiswahili. KUCCPS Cluster 3.
