Overview

Students develop competencies in early childhood teaching, child development assessment, play-based pedagogy, curriculum development, classroom management and family engagement. They learn to develop physical, creative, intellectual, personal and social capabilities of young children. The programme covers early literacy, numeracy, science, health, arts and environmental education for young learners.

In Kenya, ECDE is a growing field with the Competency-Based Curriculum emphasising foundational learning. Maasai Mara University offers this programme alongside other education specialisations. County governments manage pre-primary education while universities train ECDE teachers. Kenya's commitment to universal access to early childhood education creates demand. Graduates find roles in ECDE centres, pre-primary schools, primary schools and child development organisations.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, teaching practice, micro-teaching, field visits and research projects. Students develop lesson plans, teach young children and undertake teaching practice in ECDE centres. The programme includes a final-year research project.
