Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development

The Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development is a four-year programme that prepares students for teaching and supporting young children's development in early childhood settings. Students study child development, early childhood education, play-based learning, curriculum development and educational psychology. The programme is offered by universities including Chuka University, Kenya Methodist University, Kisii University, Laikipia University and Turkana University College.

Students develop competencies in early childhood teaching, child development assessment, play-based pedagogy, curriculum development, classroom management and family engagement. They learn to develop physical, creative, intellectual, personal and social capabilities of young children through age-appropriate pedagogy. The programme covers early literacy, numeracy, science, health and arts for young learners.

In Kenya, early childhood development is a priority area under the Competency-Based Curriculum which emphasises foundational learning. County governments manage pre-primary education while universities train ECDE teachers. Chuka University offers this programme at KES 50,000 per semester for full-time students. Kenya's commitment to universal access to early childhood education creates demand for qualified teachers.
