Bachelor of Cooperative Management
The Bachelor of Cooperative Management is a four-year degree programme that prepares students for leadership and management roles within the cooperative movement and SACCO sector. The programme combines principles of business management, finance, governance and development studies with specialised knowledge of cooperative business models. Students learn how cooperative organisations operate, how to manage member-based enterprises, and how to apply cooperative principles to community economic empowerment.
The curriculum covers cooperative theory, financial management, governance, audit, marketing, project management and development economics. Students examine the legal and regulatory framework governing cooperatives in Kenya, including the Cooperative Societies Act and the role of the State Department for Cooperatives. The programme emphasises practical skills in cooperative governance, financial analysis and member mobilisation.
Kenya has one of the largest cooperative movements in Africa, with over 22,000 registered cooperative societies and SACCOs managing significant assets. The sector employs thousands of professionals and contributes substantially to financial inclusion and rural development. Graduates find employment in SACCO management, cooperative audit firms, the Cooperative University of Kenya, county cooperative offices, microfinance institutions and development organisations.
The programme is delivered through coursework, case studies, industrial attachment and a research project. Students gain hands-on experience through attachment at cooperative societies, SACCOs and regulatory bodies. The curriculum is regularly updated to reflect changes in cooperative legislation and emerging trends such as digital SACCOs and value chain financing.
Entry requires a KCSE mean grade of C+ with appropriate subject combinations. The programme is offered at Meru University of Science and Technology, with intakes in September. Tuition for government-sponsored students is subsidised under the Kenyan higher education funding model.
Graduates are equipped to manage cooperative enterprises, provide consultancy to SACCOs, work in cooperative regulatory bodies, or establish their own cooperative ventures. The programme's focus on member-based business models distinguishes it from conventional business management degrees.

In its favour
- Kenya has one of the largest cooperative movements in Africa with strong employment opportunities
- Specialised knowledge of cooperative business models differentiates graduates from general business management peers
- Growing digital SACCO sector creates new career opportunities
Against it
- Limited to one university offering this exact programme in Kenya
- Some employers may not distinguish cooperative management from general business management
