Learning Experience (LX) Designer

Learning experience designers combine instructional design, UX design, and learning science to build courses and training programs that people actually finish and retain — moving beyond static slide decks toward interactive, adaptive, and often AI-personalized learning journeys. The role sits between traditional curriculum development and product design, treating a course the way a product team treats an app: with user research, iteration, and measured outcomes.

As Kenyan universities, TVET institutions, and edtech startups adopt AI-personalized learning platforms, they need designers who understand both pedagogy and how to translate it into an adaptive digital experience — a distinct skill set from either traditional teaching or generic instructional design alone.

A day in the role

"I spend as much time watching where learners get stuck in a course as I do actually building content — the redesign always comes from what the data and the learners tell you, not from what I assumed would work."

What it pays

The trade offs

In its favour

  • Combines creative design work with measurable, data-driven impact on learning outcomes.
  • Growing demand as institutions professionalise online/hybrid course quality.

Against it

  • Still a loosely-defined title that overlaps with instructional design in many job postings.
  • Requires convincing subject-matter experts to change how they've always taught, which can be slow.

In practice

Redesign an existing free course (even informally) applying user-research methods — interview a few learners about where they got stuck, then show a before/after redesign in your portfolio.

Progression runs instructional designer/teacher → LX designer → head of learning design, taking ownership of an institution or company's overall learning-product strategy.

Universities expanding online/hybrid programs and edtech startups building learning apps for local and pan-African markets are the strongest employers.

A typical day includes reviewing learner engagement data, working with subject-matter experts to structure content, and iterating on interactive elements of a course.

Who hires

Interview preparation

3 questions
  • Walk me through how you'd redesign a course with a 40% drop-off rate at module 3.

    SituationalMid

Look for a research-first approach: analysing where and why learners disengage before redesigning, rather than guessing at a fix.

  • How do you decide what parts of a course should be AI-personalized versus fixed for everyone?

    TechnicalSenior

Should discuss where personalisation genuinely improves outcomes (pacing, remediation) versus where consistency matters (core assessments).

  • What's the difference between instructional design and learning experience design?

    TechnicalEntry

LX design adds a UX-research and iterative-testing layer on top of traditional content-structuring instructional design.

Common misconceptions

  • It's the same as being an instructional designer.

LX design adds a UX research and product-iteration layer — testing with real learners, measuring completion and comprehension, and redesigning based on data — beyond just structuring content.

  • AI content generation makes this role less necessary.

AI can draft content faster, but someone still has to design the overall learning journey, decide what personalisation actually helps versus distracts, and validate pedagogical quality.

What to do
Build a portfolio showing a full learning-design cycle: research, design, launch, and a data-backed redesign — not just finished course content.
