Murang'a University of Technology (MUT)

Established in 2012 as Murang'a University College, a constituent college of JKUAT, and chartered in 2016, Murang'a University of Technology (MUT) is located in Murang'a Town, Murang'a County. The university serves over 8,500 students across its Main and Mariira Satellite campuses.

The university operates eight schools including Engineering and Technology, Pure Applied and Health Sciences, Computing and Information Technology, Business and Economics, Education, and Graduate Studies. Its engineering programmes are EBK-accredited, with a focus on appropriate technology for rural industrialisation.

Accredited by CUE and EBK, MUT ranks 11th nationally. Its technology-focused mandate and central Kenya location make it a key institution for engineering and computing training in the Mount Kenya region.

Mut's directorate of research, innovation and consultancy (dric) has spearheaded numerous research activities, including the university's first international academic conference in november 2021, which attracted over 1,000 participants and 98 research papers on harnessing technology and innovation. the vice chancellor's research and innovation grant funds internal projects, with 19 research proposals and 6 innovations funded in 2021/2022 alone. the school of engineering and technology has registered an innovation with the kenya industrial property institute (kipi), demonstrating the university's growing patent portfolio. the nrf funded analytical and imaging laboratory promotes research and offers analytical services to industry and community. partnership with kirdi connects academic research to industrial application, while the iucea affiliation ensures regional standards. research focuses on engineering, water management, renewable energy, and ict, with the kenya china tivet project advancing reverse engineering capabilities that directly support kenya's manufacturing agenda under vision 2030.

A C+ mean grade is the minimum for a Bachelor's degree; competitive programmes (medicine, engineering, law, nursing, architecture) require higher grades and specific KCSE subject clusters. Master's programmes require a relevant Bachelor's degree; PhD programmes a relevant Master's degree.
