Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST)

Founded in 1972 as the Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences (WECART), Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) was chartered in 2007 as a full public university. Located in Kakamega, Kakamega County, MMUST serves over 20,000 students across four campuses including Main, Nairobi, Bungoma, and Webuye.

The university operates 11 schools including Agriculture Veterinary Sciences and Technology, Arts and Social Sciences, Business and Economics, Computing and Informatics, Engineering, Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Public Health, Education, Pure and Applied Sciences, and Graduate Studies. Its engineering programmes are EBK-accredited.

Accredited by CUE and EBK, MMUST ranks 24th nationally. Named after the institution the institution, a prominent independence-era politician, it is the largest public university in Kenya's western region and a key institution for STEM education in the former Western Province.

Mmust has established itself as a hub for groundbreaking research in biomedical sciences, renewable energy, agriculture, climate change, and disaster risk reduction. the school of disaster management and humanitarian assistance, originally established as a centre for disaster management in 2004 and now a member of the periperi africa consortium, leads research on climate change adaptation, emergency response, and conflict resolution — directly addressing vulnerabilities in western kenya. the school of agriculture, veterinary sciences and technology advances research on indigenous livestock and crop improvement suited to the region's ecology. partnerships with vrije universiteit brussel (belgium) support joint research, while collaboration with anafe strengthens agroforestry research. mmust's growing research output in health sciences and clean energy technologies increasingly informs county level policy across kakamega, bungoma, and the wider western region, bridging academic inquiry with community resilience.

A C+ mean grade is the minimum for a Bachelor's degree; competitive programmes (medicine, engineering, law, nursing, architecture) require higher grades and specific KCSE subject clusters. Master's programmes require a relevant Bachelor's degree; PhD programmes a relevant Master's degree.
