Students engage with advanced topics in veterinary pathology, diagnostic pathology, necropsy, histopathology, clinical pathology, molecular diagnostics, pathobiology, oncology, infectious disease pathology, immunopathology and research methods. The curriculum emphasises original research that develops veterinary pathology insights for Kenya's animal disease challenges.
Kenya's livestock disease burden, zoonotic diseases, wildlife diseases, disease surveillance, food safety, meat inspection, diagnostic services, outbreak investigation, One Health and the demand for veterinary pathology research create demand for doctoral-level veterinary pathology expertise. The programme supports Kenya's animal health and disease control goals.
Teaching is delivered through coursework, laboratory sessions and supervised research. At UoN, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine offers PhD in Pathobiology (JPM8) and related pathology programmes. Application fee KSh 4,000. PhD in Agriculture or Veterinary Sciences approximately KSh 600,000 for entire programme.

A day as a student
A typical day involves conducting pathology research, examining tissue samples under the microscope, running molecular diagnostics, reviewing pathology literature, attending seminars on pathobiology, meeting with supervisors to discuss research progress, and engaging with KEMRI, KWS and diagnostic labs for research collaboration.
