Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology

A day as a student

A typical day during the MMed Ophthalmology residency begins with morning clinic sessions where residents assess patients with various eye conditions, perform refractions, and examine patients using slit lamps and ophthalmoscopes. Residents diagnose and manage cataracts, glaucoma, corneal diseases, retinal conditions, and paediatric eye disorders. Operating theatre sessions involve performing cataract surgeries, trabeculectomies, and other eye surgical procedures under consultant supervision. Academic sessions include lectures on ocular anatomy, optics, pathology, and case discussions linking clinical findings to diagnoses. Community eye health sessions involve vision screening programmes and outreach activities. Journal clubs review recent ophthalmic research. Residents rotate through subspecialties including vitreoretinal, cornea, glaucoma, paediatric ophthalmology, and oculoplasty. On-call duties involve managing eye emergencies and trauma.
