Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology

The Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology is a postgraduate medical specialty programme that trains medical doctors to become specialist anaesthesiologists. The programme prepares graduates to provide anaesthetic care, manage perioperative patients, handle critical care, and manage acute and chronic pain in Kenya and beyond.

Core areas of study include anaesthesia principles, pharmacology of anaesthetic agents, regional anaesthesia, general anaesthesia, critical care medicine, pain management, perioperative medicine, obstetric anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, cardiothoracic anaesthesia, neuroanaesthesia, and research methods. Students engage with both theoretical foundations and extensive clinical practice.

The programme is listed at Zetech University, Great Lakes University of Kisumu, and University of Kabianga, with Aga Khan University as a college. Aga Khan University offers a four-year residency training in Anaesthesiology leading to MMed, based at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. The programme combines academic study with intensive clinical training.

Students develop competencies in anaesthesia administration, airway management, perioperative care, critical care management, pain management, regional anaesthesia techniques, obstetric anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, emergency anaesthesia, and anaesthesia research. The programme includes coursework, clinical rotations, examinations, and a research dissertation.

The programme is delivered over four years with full-time residency mode. Aga Khan University's programme consists of four years of training and examinations, with candidates admitted on merit from across East Africa. The programme is designed for medical doctors (MBChB or equivalent) seeking to specialise in anaesthesiology.

Graduates pursue careers as consultant anaesthesiologists, critical care specialists, pain medicine specialists, and academic anaesthesiologists in hospitals, medical schools, and health ministries.

A day as a student

A typical day during the MMed Anaesthesiology residency involves early morning hospital rounds to assess patients scheduled for surgery, followed by operating theatre sessions where residents administer anaesthesia under consultant supervision. Residents manage preoperative assessment, induce anaesthesia, monitor patients during surgery, and manage postoperative recovery. Academic sessions include lectures on anaesthesia pharmacology, physiology, and clinical scenarios. Journal clubs and case discussions deepen understanding of evidence-based anaesthesia practice. On-call duties involve managing emergency anaesthesia, trauma cases, and critical care patients. Residents rotate through various subspecialties including obstetric, paediatric, cardiac, and neuroanaesthesia. Research methodology sessions prepare residents for their dissertation. The programme at Aga Khan University is based at the hospital in Nairobi, providing exposure to diverse surgical cases. Senior residents take increasing responsibility for anaesthesia management and teaching junior colleagues. The four-year programme culminates in MMed examinations and dissertation defence.

The trade offs

In its favour

  • Kenya has a severe shortage of anaesthesiologists, creating very high demand and excellent career prospects nationwide.
  • Anaesthesiologists earn competitive salaries and are among the highest-paid medical specialists in Kenya.
  • Aga Khan University programme provides high-quality training with international standards and exposure to diverse surgical cases.
  • Programme develops versatile skills applicable across surgical specialities, critical care, pain medicine, and emergency medicine.

Against it

  • Four-year full-time residency requires significant time commitment and may limit income during training years.
  • Programme involves high-stress work environment with life-and-death decisions, long hours, and on-call duties.
  • Limited training positions available, making admission highly competitive.
  • Listed public universities may not have established MMed Anaesthesiology programmes, limiting training options to Aga Khan University.

Industry links

Common misconceptions

  • Anaesthesiology is just about putting patients to sleep for surgery.

Anaesthesiology encompasses comprehensive perioperative care, critical care medicine, pain management, emergency resuscitation, and management of complex medical conditions during surgical procedures.

  • Anaesthesiologists have limited career prospects in Kenya.

Kenya has a severe shortage of anaesthesiologists, creating very high demand and excellent career prospects in hospitals, medical schools, and critical care units nationwide.

  • This programme is only for those who couldn't get into other specialties.

Anaesthesiology is a highly competitive and intellectually demanding specialty requiring deep knowledge of physiology, pharmacology, and acute medicine, attracting top medical graduates.

  • Anaesthesiology is a sedentary specialty with no patient interaction.

Anaesthesiologists have significant patient interaction during preoperative assessment, provide critical care management, and are key decision-makers in perioperative care and emergencies.

  • The four-year duration is unnecessarily long.

The four-year residency is essential for developing competencies across all anaesthesia subspecialties, critical care, and pain management, meeting international standards for anaesthesia training.

  • Anaesthesiology is becoming automated with new technology.

While technology assists monitoring, anaesthesiologists remain essential for clinical decision-making, managing complications, and providing judgement that technology cannot replicate.
